Ecology
The leaves of this perennial water-lily are erect rather than floating. It is occasionally grown in gardens, and has been recorded as planted from lakes and ponds, where it then becomes naturalised through rhizomatous growth; reproduction by seed has not been reported. Lowland.

Trends
N. advena has been grown in Britain since 1772. It was first collected from a curling pond at Kirkhill (Easterness) in 1963, but not identified until 1990, and may have been present at some sites in Surrey since the 18th century. It does not appear to be spreading, but it may be under-recorded.
World Distribution
Native of eastern N. America, Mexico and Cuba.
