Ecology

A low-growing evergreen shrub, favouring moderately well-drained acidic soils and occurring in dwarf shrub and Racomitrium heaths, rock crevices and dry heather moor, including areas of late snow-lie. Usually montane, occurring from 610 m to 1130 m in the Cairngorm (Easterness), but formerly on coastal dunes at Tain (E. Ross).

Circumpolar Boreo-arctic Montane element; its distribution is more northerly than the Boreal-montane subsp. nigrum.
