A perennial herb of damp disturbed places, found near streams and canals, in woods, on shaded banks, and in street gutters and gardens. Generally lowland, but reaching 560 m on Wold Fell (Mid-W. Yorks.).
Status

Trends
E. roseum is a distinctive species, especially once seen, which is much better recorded now than it was in the 1962 Atlas. The current map, however, shows many losses at the 10-km square level, and there seems to have been some retrenchment of distribution in favour of E. ciliatum, although the patterns are difficult to interpret.
World Distribution
