Trends
L. hirsutus was once considered to be native in S. Essex, where it was discovered at Hadleigh Castle in 1666 and survived until at least 1958, when the management of its grassland habitat changed. It has been introduced into some Essex nature reserves. Elsewhere it was not infrequent as a casual, but is now much rarer.
