An annual of waste ground, docks and rubbish tips, where it is introduced with grain, wool shoddy, bird-seed, esparto and soya bean waste. Lowland.
L. rigidum was first recorded in the wild in Britain in 1864 (E. Gloucs.). Formerly more frequent, it has declined and is now a very rare casual.
Native of S. Europe, the Mediterranean region and S.W. & C. Asia; widely naturalised in N. & S. America, Australia and elsewhere.
