An annual which escapes from cultivation onto rubbish tips, waste ground, old walls and in pavement cracks. It readily regenerates from seed and populations can be persistent, but only in disturbed sites where there is little competition. It was formerly a relatively frequent grain alien (Dunn, 1905). Lowland.

Native of the Mediterranean region.
