Ecology
An annual root-hemiparasite of short, often trampled grasslands, tracks, waste places, the edges of arable fields, gravelly and rocky seashores and saltmarshes. 0-540 m (Nenthead, Cumberland).

Trends
The distribution of this species has not altered significantly since the 1962 Atlas. Three subspecies are represented in our area: subsp. vernus is widespread, subsp. serotinus is concentrated in S. Britain and Ireland, and subsp. litoralis is mapped separately.
World Distribution
Eurasian Temperate element; widely naturalised outside its native range.
