Ecology
An annual root-hemiparasite of coastal grasslands on stabilised sand dunes, gravelly and rocky seashores, the upper margins of saltmarshes, and on waste ground near the sea. Lowland.

Trends
Subsp. litoralis has been confused with depauperate specimens of the two weedy widespread subspecies, which may also occur in its coastal habitats. It was mapped by Perring & Sell (1968), but is still under-recorded.
World Distribution
European Boreo-temperate element. Subsp. litoralis was described from the Baltic; plants from S. Sweden southwards may be a distinct taxon, subsp. pumilus.
