An annual occurring as a casual on rubbish tips, cultivated and waste ground, mainly from wool and bird-seed but also from grain, agricultural seed and oil-seed. Lowland.

Trends
S. pumila was first cultivated in Britain in 1819 and was known from the wild by 1867. It is probably under-recorded, but seems to be increasing.
World Distribution
Native range uncertain but probably centred on the Mediterranean region and S.W. Asia; the species is now naturalised in warm-temperate and subtropical areas throughout the N. hemisphere and elsewhere.
