A deciduous tree frequently grown in gardens, parks, along streets and on roadsides and found naturalised in semi-natural woodland, rough grassland and chalk pits. Reproduction is by seed. Lowland.
This species was introduced into cultivation in Britain in 1779. It was recorded from the wild in 1985 (Banffs.) and may be increasing.
Native of Fennoscandia.
